About Us
Suess Builders is a family-owned and operated remodeling contractor proudly serving Harford County, Baltimore County, and Southern York County, PA. While our roots in construction go back to 1985 with a focus on commercial carpentry, we’ve been dedicated to residential remodeling since 1997, building our reputation on craftsmanship, honesty, and personal service. From large-scale commercial carpentry in Baltimore City to residential remodeling throughout northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania, our journey has always been about doing good work for good people.
Our Story
Our roots go back to 1985, when Joe Suess founded Doors and Hardware—a commercial subcontracting business that focused on door and hardware installations. Joe’s first project was Tindeco Wharf, working with Streuver Bros. Eccles & Rouse to help convert the historic factory into apartments. As demand for skilled carpenters grew, the business evolved into D&H Carpentry, Inc., a full-service commercial carpentry contractor serving Baltimore during its period of revitalization.

Joe and his team contributed to many notable Baltimore projects, including Tide Point, the Peabody Institute, Pier 5, the Tower at Living Classrooms, and the redevelopment of the Lexington Terrace area. These projects laid the foundation for the principles that guide our work today: strong communication, attention to detail, and a commitment to doing things right.
In 1997, Joe and his wife Erica relocated to Harford County and founded D&H Construction to bring their experience and quality standards to residential remodeling. That move marked the beginning of what is now Suess Builders—a name we adopted in the mid-2000s when our son Jake joined the team full-time.
A Family Business Built on Trust
At Suess Builders, clients are treated like neighbors—because they are. Instead of working with a salesperson or third-party, you deal directly with Joe or Jake. Every project is personally overseen, handled with clear communication, and completed with pride. Over the years, many of our clients have become repeat customers—and friends.
We’ve grown through word-of-mouth referrals, not flashy marketing. Our crew is small, skilled, and respectful. We care about your home and your experience during the project just as much as the finished result. That’s why we say: we’re not just building houses—we’re building trust, one project at a time.
Decades of Experience. Modern Craftsmanship.
With nearly 40 years in the construction industry, Suess Builders brings deep experience to every remodeling project. At the same time, we stay current with modern tools, techniques, and training to meet today’s building codes and client expectations. Joe and Jake are hands-on builders who believe in blending traditional craftsmanship with forward-thinking remodeling solutions.
Whether we’re completing a kitchen renovation, building a home addition, or remodeling a bathroom, we focus on thoughtful planning, quality materials, and doing things the right way the first time.
